When to Get a License Please note that the license must be used or "certified" by the Officiant within 60 calendar days from issuance or the license will become void so you should not obtain a marriage license unless you plan to get married within the next 60 days from the date of issuance.

Requirements There are no residency requirements and couples may purchase their marriage license at any Circuit Court in Virginia. The marriage ceremony must be performed in Virginia within 60 days after the license is issued. There is no waiting period required between application and issuance of the license and a couple may be married immediately after the issuance of a license.

Certified copies of birth, marriage and divorce certificates can be obtained from the Thomas Jefferson Health District health departments for any of these events as long as they occurred in Virginia.

Copies of certificates can be obtained for and are available to immediate family members only — mother, father, husband, wife, child, brother, sister and grandparents with valid ID. Birth records can be issued to the legal guardian with proof of custody papers.
